Younique 3D Fiber Lashes: Do They Really Work?

I was recently sent a gift of the new Younique Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes kit and asked to try them out.  I'll admit, I've been intrigued by all the hubbub and talk there has been about the product that instantly makes your lashes look thick & long.  I have no eyelashes to begin with, so of course I was excited to try them out.

So I tested them out for you guys to let you know if they really worked. Your welcome.

What are 3D Fiber Lashes?

What was this stuff I was going to put on my eyelashes???  Here's the scoop directly from the website:

3D Fiber Lashes, is a three step process of first applying the Transplanting Gel, then the 100% Natural Green Tea Fibers and then sealing the fibers with a final coat of Transplanting Gel. This adds 300% more length and volume to your natural lashes without the high cost, maintenance, messy glue, and damage caused by false lashes and eyelash extensions. The Transplanting Gel has collagen in it which contains antioxidants, and may help add volume and shine to the appearance of eyelashes.  The 3D Fiber Lashes are water resistant but easily wash off with warm water and facial cleanser at the end of the day.

Are 3D Fiber Lashes Hard to Use?

The mention of artificial lashes makes me think back to the time to my daughter's dance recital days and the fighting over mascara and the false eyelashes.  It was such a pain, that I was turned off to ever wear them myself - unless someone else put them on.  So without reading the product description and instructions on how to use it, I didn't think I would like it based on the application process. I assumed it would take 10 minutes PER eye and I wouldn't be able to get it right.

Ya'll, I couldn't have been MORE wrong. The application is simple - Use your mascara for a quick coat. Add the transplanting gel.  Brush on the fiber lashes evenly.  Add another small coat of transplanting gel.  Easy. Took me just as much time as putting ton 2 coats of mascara would. And if you are a little nervous about applying them, check out all the videos that show you how.

Do 3D Fiber Lashes Work?

Just as I was amazed at how simple it was to put them on, I was even more impressed at how natural they looked on me.  I have always wanted darker, thicker eyelashes and with Younique, it's an easy application to have them.  Some pictures you may see online show a much more dramatic look, but with my short eyelashes,  I felt this was a natural addition.  They didn't have a "fake" appearance at all.

When I first added them on, I initially felt like something was different on my eyes, but that sensation quickly faded.  I wore them all day and even by evening, I had the same look.  The lashes did not fall off throughout the day on me (I think the 2nd coat of gel helps with that), yet they easily came off with soap and water.

Here are the shots from my first application of the lashes, I have since become more proficient and can put multiple layers on to make them even more dramatic.

Are 3D Fiber Lashes Worth It?

At the cost of $29 for the kit, I feel this is a relatively inexpensive way to change your look.  I have paid more for mascara than this before.  It seems that the kit would last a good 2-3 months (maybe more depending on how often you use them).  I think it's a great investment.

Younique Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes are sold by individuals in the community.  I love to support local people and I would love if you are interested in trying the lashes for you to contact my representative - Allison Florence.  I don't get a commission or sales credit, she just graciously sent me a kit to try and I would love for her to get the benefit of my review.  Thank y'all.  Enjoy your new look!

Non-Runner Half-Marathon Training Tips

Are you on the fence about running a half-marathon?  Here are 7 tips to train for a Half-Marathon if you are a non-runner that I have learned through the last few years.

4 years ago, I completed my first half-marathon.  It was the San Antonio Rock n' Roll and it was an amazing accomplishment. I don't exactly remember why I ran the race, I think my friend said "I'm going to run this, want to run it with me?" Ok.

But it was a great accomplishment for this non-runner.  I had always been jealous of my running friends - they look so bold and confident.....and skinny..... while they are running.  I always thought of myself as someone who could "never run".  However, when my youngest was born and I was heavier than I had ever been in my entire life I was desperate to try it.  I started slow, with a mile at a time and the Couch to 5K app on my iPhone.  Me and the baby in the stroller, day after day until I got up to running 3 miles and had lost 40-ish pounds. Maybe I actually could be a runner after all.

The race was incredible.  The energy from the crowd made running 13.1 miles seem easy. Yes, I said easy.  I ran with my closest friend and we both were very happy with our accomplishment.  As I crossed the finish line, I remember thinking I will do this again.

After finishing the San Antonio Rock n' Roll in November 2010,  I was in the best shape of my life. I was down to a size that I was happy with (which come on girls, that's hard to admit!) and I was happy to have done something 3 years earlier I never would have imagined doing.  What was next? I needed to maintain that figure I had worked hard to get and try for another race.

We signed up for another half the following year - the Zooma Run, a women-only half-marathon held on the Hyatt Lost Pines property in April 2011.  Unfortunately, this race was not as motivating as my first. This race consisted of some big hills that we were not prepared for.  I pushed myself the entire race, trying to maintain a pace I had not trained with and absolutely HATED the last 2 miles of the run.  This time, I walked away thinking NEVER again.

Fast forward 3 years.  I am running again. I'm running the 3M Half-Marathon in Austin in January 2015.  And before I started training a few weeks ago, I tried to think of all the tips that would help me along the way, to avoid the outcome of my second race. Here they are for you.

7 Tips for Non-Runners Training for a Half-Marathon

1. Why are you Running? - When you make the decision to run a half-marathon, make sure you clearly understand why you are running it. There will be weeks of training ahead of you, weeks of days you don't want to tie those shoes and get out the door. But with a clear goal in mind, it will make it that much easier to put the hard work in.

Looking back, my motivation for my first race was doing something I didn't think I could do.  But I had no goal for the second one, so my training was not as intense.  For this upcoming race, I want to lose weight and I know that maintaining a rigorous training schedule (thus burning mucho calories!) can help me accomplish this goal.  Make sure you clearly understand your motivation or you will not stay committed.

2. Select a Good Training Plan and Stick to It! There are lots of great plans out there on the internets, even apps for your phone that can keep you moving.  Some plans are intense with 3-4 runs a week and some are gradual.  I used this 20 week plan as I wanted to start training in September and only do 2-3 runs a week.  Choose the one that best works for you.  Then schedule your runs on your calendar. Make your weekly runs a priority - set them as an appointment and try your best not to "reschedule" them cause chances are you won't.  I don't book anything on Tuesday mornings. That's my long run day.

3. Get Good Running Shoes.  Friends, spend the money.  If you are going to be running miles and miles each week, invest in a pair of running shoes that will take care of your body while you are pounding it to the pavement.  My recommendation is to go to a running store and ask them to watch your stride.  They are knowledgeable in determining if you over-pronate or not and can find a shoe that fits your run.  Don't look at price tags when picking a running shoe - go for what feels best.  Your body will thank you.

4. Train & Run the Race with a Friend.  I can't imagine all the training runs without my good friend, Melissa.  She is the one who got me started for my first half, we did the 2nd together, and she is here again for my third.  If you are running all that distance each week, do it with a friend - the run goes by so much faster.  We talk and get things off our chest and give each other advice - it's great therapy!  And having an accountability partner will keep you on track.  Just this morning, as I wanted to have a day off, Melissa texted me - "See you at 7:40!"  Thanks friend for keeping me on track.

5. Workout on your Off Days. Don't think that running 3 days a week is all you need to get ready.  Your body needs a little cross training on the off days - things like yoga, boot camp, or strength training are good.  It gives your muscles the time to rest in-between runs.  Changing up the routine makes you a well-rounded athlete.

6. Make the Race a Fun Event.  Many people choose destination races to run in a different part of the country (I hope to do a race through Napa Valley one day!) and make a fun trip out of it. You can plan a girls' weekend with the center piece of the trip being accomplishing a half.  No matter where you run the race, make the race a big deal by eating special the few days before the get your body fueled correctly, stay in a nice hotel close to the race, or get a massage after the run. Treat yourself for all the hard work you have done to prepare for it.

7. Remain Hydrated.  I don't like to drink water while I run and for a while, I didn't drink much water throughout the day.  However, I have recently researched the benefits of staying hydrated ALL DAY as a runner and have been working hard to keep my body hydrated. I didn't realize this, but even a slight dehydration of 2% of your body weight can cause a decrease in performance and makes you sluggish.

A few weeks ago, I mentioned on Twitter that I was beginning to train for the half.  Nuun contacted me and offered to send me a few samples to keep myself hydrated correctly.  I was excited as I always had looked at Nuun as a "runner's drink" and didn't think I was elite enough to need it.

Nuun (pronounced "Noon") is the first sugar-free electrolyte tab that dissolves in water.  Nuun's creator was looking for a way to get his electrolytes in after a hard workout without consuming all that sugar. Water is great to keep you hydrated, however you need to replace the electrolytes you are losing while you are intensely training. You should be hydrating before, during, and after your workouts and if you wait until you are thirsty, you are too late and will be playing catch-up all day.

I was excited to try both Nuun Active Hydration and Nuun Energy. Nuun Active Hydration is the "perfect sports drink" - The electrolytes found in Nuun will help alleviate cramps, help muscles function, communicate and burn energy efficiently. Nuun Energy has all the electrolyte plus 40 mg of caffeine - and what busy mom doesn't need a boost of caffeine?

There are a lot of scientific reasons why Nuun products are a great way to keep your body hydrated (and you can read about them here), but let's get down to what really matters - How does Nuun taste?  Depending on your personal preference of flavor, Nuun tabs taste great.  Some better than others.  What flavors I found I liked, my hubby and daughter didn't and vice-versa.  Beyond the flavor, Nuun dissolves completely, leaving no grit or aftertaste.  You do feel a bit fuller after drinking a glass of water with a Nuun tab than you would with just regular water.

I have now gotten into the habit of drinking a Nuun tab after each run & workout and I definitely feel a difference in my stamina throughout the rest of the day.  I feel like I have more energy to accomplish more, as I am replenishing what my body needs.  As my weekly runs get longer, I plan on taking Nuun with me on them, so I can be hydrating as I run (anything over an hour).

My hope in writing this article is to encourage you to run a half-marathon.  Even if you are just "thinking about it", get off the fence and commit.  It's not easy, but an incredible accomplishment.

What tips do you have for training and running a half-marathon?

Disclosure: Nuun sent me a few samples to try.  I was not compensated to write this article.  All opinions about Nuun are my own.

9 Tips for Better Instagram Photos

9 Tips for better Instagram Photos

People love to see pictures.  And with so much media hitting us from all different channels, a picture is quick, visual and can easily tell a story.  So what is the best way to convey what you are experiencing and tell that story using pictures? I really like to use Instagram

As a travel blogger, great photos are key to showing my audience what I am experiencing.  I like to show everyone what I am seeing on a real-time basis, not just a few weeks later in a published story.  Instagram is a great tool for this, however you can very easily bore your audience if you don't show the right types of photos.  Here are a few tips I use on Instagram to engage and even grow my audience.

9 Tips for Better Instagram Photos

1. Show yourself

It’s great to see shots of places that you are, but people really prefer to see people. I get twice as many likes and interactions on photos when I am in the picture.  It shows your audience that you are there, that you are having fun, that you are a real person - not just behind the camera, writing the story.

I have to say, not my most flattering shot but fun, right?

2. Creativity goes a long way

To make your shots really stick out on the Instagram feed, get creative.  Everyone does a selfie, how will yours stick out? I’m not the biggest fan of having my photograph taken, so I try to get creative with my shots.  Make a funny face, pose in a fun position, line up your family differently, grab a prop - don’t just look at the camera and smile - everyone else does. If you feel awkward, good - put your inhibitions away and have fun!

Don't need a fancy camera for this shot, as I snapped it with my iPhone.

3. Show your emotion (excitement, joy, fear, worry)

Nothing tells a story better than to show how you are feeling about what you are doing. I was at charity event this past summer and I didn’t realize that we each had $300 to shop for the raffle event.  My partner that day actually caught me in the moment, excited about the prospect of shopping with that much cash.  Show your audience how you feel about something - fear to tackle that roller coaster, excited to catch the big fish, uncertain how that meal will taste?  Show us!

What do you think? Did I enjoy riding Tower of Terror 3 times in a row???

4. Show a landmark/familiar place

If you are traveling to a place that has familiar landmarks, show them to us.  Put yourself or your family in the picture and again, get creative with the shot.  Take the photo from a different angle or perspective (get on the ground and look up, get the shadow of the landmark, a unique situation going on around it, a big crowd to show how popular it is, etc.).  To make your photo stand out, think outside of the box.

Any guesses where we were that day?

5. Show a variety of pictures from the day/resort/event

Clearly I love to take pictures, and take a lot of them.  But, you do not need to post all of them to tell your story. There is nothing that makes me unfollow a person faster than if they post 6 pictures of the same thing all in a row.  Pick your best shot to share on IG or spread them out over the day.  Many times I will grab a bunch of shots of a place I am at and jot down some notes in my phone as to what to post throughout the day.  If you have some great photos and can’t narrow it down, hold on to them and do a #latergram a few days or weeks later - it always starts up a new conversation.
There were so many great shots to post to IG when we were at Disneyland, but it's shots like these that show the whole day in one picture.  Take your time and post the meaningful, good shots.

6. A Good Description goes a long way

When posting a picture to Instagram, you don’t have to be verbose to tell a story, and you don’t have to limit your words either. Make sure you provide context/description to each one of your pictures.  You can’t just assume that someone has been following your IG feed all day. Consider each picture as the first time someone has seen it.

If I didn't tell you what I was doing here, you'd be scratching your head, huh?

7. Ask a question

Who doesn’t love to give their opinion?  Asking for advice along with your pictures will allow for more interactions with readers.  When I asked where we needed to eat while in Houston on a picture of the city, we had answers coming for days. Get your readers to tell you best tips to visit that water park, what the best thing to order off the menu is, what color Kendra Scott earrings you should buy, etc.

So friends, which ones should I get?

8. Show your results

Just like every good story needs an ending, your day should finish with one too. If you start with a challenge, make sure to follow up with what the outcome/results are.  Post a picture of a tired family exiting the amusement park, the sunset over the water, or a glass of wine to relax after a busy day.  Show us your ending.

And this is after a full day of waterpark slides, roller coasters, and shows!

9. Make a hashtag

I am a big fan of using a hashtag - the correct way.  Seek out the hashtag of the places you visit (chances are they have one) and if they don't,  create one of your own.  Your entire story can unfold with one click if you create a hashtag.  Last summer, I am used #darlingroadtrip to chronicle all our road trip travels. Also, don’t stuff your description with hashtags or use silly ones ( #coolestmomever #whydidIgoonthis15hourroadtripwithmykidsIneedaglassofwine <——seriously saw this yesterday!)

Instagram is fun, easy to use and so very popular.  Consider these tips when you are posting and your pictures will be the ones that get noticed!

Love Instagram?  Follow me - I'd love to follow you and see what you are seeing each day!

10 Staycation Ideas for Spring Break

Spring Break is this month for many of us.  If you find yourself at home this break, here is a little "Staycation Inspiration" to make your break a fun one!

10 Staycation Ideas for Spring Break

1. St. Patrick's Day Photo Scavenger Hunt - Photo Scavenger hunts are on of my kids' fav things to do. Create a fun list of things to find, themed around St. Patrick's Day and head to your favorite park.  Or borrow my list here.

2. Breakfast for Dinner - We like to call it Brinner in our house. Make it special - chocolate chip pancakes with whipped cream smiles anyone?

3. Movie Marathon - Rent a couple of movies or maybe set a goal to watch all your favorites (a Harry Potter Marathon might be fun!).  Stay in your PJs all day and eat junk food. Come on mom, it's only one day!

4. Family Game Day Tournament - Make a list of all your favorite family games, create a tournament bracket and spend the day gaming, old fashioned style!

5. Geocaching - Again, another one of my kiddos' favorties - Geocaching is FREE, FUN, and educational (but don't tell your kids that!) Learn more about it here.

6. Indoor Masking Tape Race Track - Last Summer, we built an indoor racetrack for all my 3 year old's car out of masking tape.  It covered 3 rooms!  He played with that track for hours.....ok days.  It was the BEST idea.  See how we did it here.

7. Backyard Camping - Pitch a tent in your own backyard.  Get the feeling of camping, while never having to leave the comforts of home behind.

8. Tourist in your Own Town - What have you been wanting to go and see in your own town, but never made time to??  This is the week to try it!

9. Visit a Park you have never been to - Find a park you have never been too and plan a day there.  Does it have great hiking or biking trails? Take a picnic basket and explore - might discover a really cool place!

10. Visit a local farm/orchard or farmers market and make something with what you picked - We have tons of great farms around here to pick your own produce.  For example, we love our local Strawberry farm and love the sweet treats we make with our strawberries even more!

What ever you plan on doing, think outside of the box and shake things up a bit for your family this week!  Have fun!!

5 Ways to Volunteer as a Family this Holiday Season

Each year, the Holiday Season comes and goes filled with excessiveness - in our eating, our spending, and yes, our giving.  Almost to a point where the actual meaning of the season is diminished.  This year I was determined to make sure our family gave back to the community, so that they would have a better appreciation for all the blessings that fill their lives.

In my research to find ways to give, I created a quick list for all of you.  Even if you are not in the Austin area, these are great ideas that you can implement pretty much anywhere.

Here are 5 Ways to Volunteer as a Family this Christmas Season:

Marine Toys for Tots Foundation
This national campaign has been collecting toys for less fortunate children since 1947.  Operating under the motto, "Every Child deserves a little Christmas", what a great message to send to your children to give to someone their age who is less fortunate than them.  Many an event of it by taking your family shopping for toys. There are MANY drop off sites (click here to find one near you) all over the Austin area.

Salvation Army & KLBJ's Cover This City
As the temps have been getting down, we all have the ability to keep warm at night.  The homeless in the area are not as fortunate.  New blanket donations are being accepted to help keep the city "covered" this winter at the Salvation Army Social Services Center in downtown Austin.  A new blanket drive is planned to begin on December 26.

Neighborhood Food Drive
Work together to collect canned goods, toiletries, and diapers for a local food pantry.  Contact the pantry you are collecting for in advance to find out what specific items they need.  Tell your neighbors in advance that you will be collecting on a certain date, so they will be prepared.  Don't know where to find one in your area?  The Capitol Area Food Bank of Texas is a great place to start.

Capitol Area Food Bank of Texas
And speaking of a food bank, why not work side by side with your kids collecting, sorting, or distributing donations?  Many food banks allow children over a certain age as long as they are volunteering with an adult. The CAFB allows children over the age of 8 accompanied with an adult.  Click here to learn more.

Thank Your First Responders
Show your appreciation for those that protect your local community.  Cook a meal, bake a pie or Christmas goodies and take them down to the local firehouse or police station in person.  Call ahead to find out when would be a good time and/or what kids of things they would appreciate most.  Go in together as a family and let them know how much you appreciate them.

If you & your family have volunteering in other ways, we'd love to hear about them! Please leave us a comment.

LASIK: Eye Did It! (A Mom's Guide to LASIK)

3 weeks ago I did it.  I received perfect eyesight, better than perfect actually, I am seeing with 20/15 vision right now.  And it's pretty amazing.  And guess what?  It's the best thing I have ever done for myself.

I hemmed and hawed for 2 years and finally made the decision. Then I took my time choosing the optometrist & surgeon I felt most comfortable with.  Next, came the actual procedure and I was ready for it.

I have heard from many of you that you would be "too scared" to have LASIK done.  There is no reason to be - honestly - especially if you want to be glasses free.  Let me walk you through what I experienced.

The Night Before - I was nervous, no lie.  But mainly because I didn't know what it would feel like to consciously know my eyeball was being cut open.  They encourage you to stay up a bit late so that you are tired the next day to sleep.  But as a busy mom of 3, I can't keep my eyes open past 10 (no pun intended).

The Morning Of - Anxious. Still nervous but with a "Let's Do It!" attitude.  My appointment wasn't until 11am, but I was up and ready to go by 7.

One Hour Before - We arrived at our appointment at Eye LASIK Austin.  My friend drove me, as I was soon to receive a valium and that would not make for a safe trip home alone.  I donned my stylish surgical cap and watched the minutes tick by very slowly on the clock.
30 Minutes Before - I met with both Dr. Walters and Dr. Zamora for any last questions (none- let's go!!) and took my valium. At this point, nerves were set in fully, so I was very happy to take something that would relax me.

The Procedure - Straight up 11am, we walk into the surgery room.  I lay down on a table and we begin.  Both Dr. Walters and the Center Director explained step by step everything they were doing. It allowed for no surprises when someone was telling me, "You will hear this noise" or "Your vision will blur slightly, this is normal." I found it extremely comforting and really made it a good experience.

Your eyes are numbed for the entire procedure, so there is really no pain.  There is a bit of pressure when your eye is being held open with a speculum, but that is about the most uncomfortable I felt.  It was unnerving knowing when the flap of my corneas were being made but before you can ponder that too long, you are moved under the laser for the actual surgery.

Just look at an orange light.  That is all I had to do.  The light was hazy, then all went black (which they said it would), then came back and gradually became sharper and sharper.  Then I was done.  I think the hardest part of the procedure came when Dr. Walters smoothed my cornea flap across my eye, but even that lasted less than 10 seconds.

One eye down, one to go - y'all it was that quick.  I was in the car and we were pulling out of the parking lot by 11:18 am. I was told to rest my eyes the whole way home and crawl into bed.  But I couldn't resist it.  I peeked.  My heart leapt as I could read the Mopac sign...without glasses on.

I had no problems sleeping the recommended 6 hours.....and then some. The valium knocked me out, which was the best thing for my eyes.  I had a cute sleeping mask to keep me from rubbing my eyes in my sleep.  I woke up occasionally, put in my eye drops and drifted back to sleep.

I was perfectly capable to drive myself to my appointment with Dr. Zamora the next morning.  I let out a big yell when he said I was reading at 20/15.  I needed to continue with an easy eye drop regimen and not rub my eyes for a few weeks - that about summed up my "recovery".  Crazy momma that I was scheduled my son's 10th birthday and had 3 games that weekend.  Back to the swing of things...only this time with my "new eyes".

The last few weeks I have had occasionally bouts of dryness in my eyes which makes my vision a bit hazy.  Dr. Zamora assured me this is completely normal, as the swelling in my eyes are still going down. In the meantime, I don't leave the house with out my artificial tears, which really feel great.

LASIK was a decision for me and I am so very happy I had it done.  I love being able to see the clock in the morning, excited to see the TV across the room, and thrilled to not go for a run wearing my glasses anymore.  I love to throw on my sunglasses and hop in the car - perfect vision.

But most of all, I feel confident - I can't say that LASIK boosted my self-esteem, or that I feel like I look that different.  But doing something special for myself has made me feel good.  I am proud that I had the courage to do it.

This article is the last of a three-part series on my LASIK experience.  Read here to find out about my decision to have it done and here to hear about how I chose my provider.

LASIK, Eye Decided Yes! (A Mom's Guide to LASIK)

Decision made.  I was ready.  Every time I'd push my glasses up my nose, I'd snort in disgust knowing I wouldn't be wearing them much longer.  I have decided to have LASIK eye surgery (read about my struggle with the decision here) and I wasn't backing out.

Decision made, now I needed to decide where to do it.  Word of mouth is big here in the Austin area, especially with so many transplanted families, we rely on others' experiences to guide us.  So I asked around.  And I researched online.  We have many choices to choose from, all having excellent references.  I made two appointments because I wanted to get a feel for two different surgery centers, see if they differed in procedure, comfort, and frankly, price.

From my free consultations, I saw that both centers were very nice.  Both had knowledgeable staff and took ample time to answer any of my questions. The procedures were very similar as well as price.  I could go with either place and have the same results - awesome vision.  However, something drew me to Dr. Zamora at Advanced Eye Care & Surgery.

It wasn't the convience (10 mins from my house), it wasn't all the high tech equipment they use to test your eyes (though that was cool), and it wasn't the fancy facility (although it is super nice). It was the releationship that I developed with Dr. Zamora & his staff.  He is very down to earth, patient, answered every single question, and made me completely at ease.  I mean, we are cutting my eyeballs open here, so you kinda want someone you trust.....

The exam itself was easy - they took topographic images of my eyeballs, tested the thickness of my corneas, and did a dryness test among other things.  Overall, I was there about 2 hours, which shows the level of care they take to do everything correctly and make sure you know exactly what you can expect.

Dr. Zamora himself had LASIK done a few months ago, so it was great to hear all the experience that he personally went through.  He walked me step by step through all the sounds, smells, and thoughts I might have during the procedure.

And he answered all the crazy questions I had - like "how do I keep my eyeball open that long??" (it's not long, less than a minute but the answer is with a speculum) and "what happens if my pupil moves while the laser is in my eye?" (y'all this technology is so amazing, the laser moves with your pupil!).  No question was too silly or too much.  All the more relaxed and confident I felt about going through with it.

One thing he was clear about - the LASIK procedure I choose would not prevent me from one day needing bi-focals.  As I was near-sighted and couldn't see across the room, seeing distance was my primary concern.  I actually tested well for my far-sightedness, so hopefully it will be years down the line before I need some "readers".

Next step, we booked the LASIK appointment (yay!) and I was scheduled to go to the actual surgery center a few days before it to get some final preperatory instructions and tests.  Dr. Tom Walters at Eye LASIK Austin was my surgeon.  His staff was just as friendly, knowledgeable and patient with me.  The pre-op appointment had me watching a set of short movies that walked me through every step from taking a valium (yes!) to relax me to the sounds I might hear while the laser is doing it's thing.  I also had a few more eye tests to confirm everything.

That was it.  I was more than ready to have the procedure done at this point. Only 2 more sleeps and I would be glasses free......but was I mentally ready for it?

Come back tomorrow to hear my actual experience with LASIK.

LASIK, Should Eye? (A Mom's Guide to LASIK)

When I was 16, I failed my driving test.  Because of my eyesight, not my stupendous driving skills, mind you.  I couldn't see.  And I didn't even realize it.  Once I put glasses on, everything suddenly became clearer - imagine that.
Back when I was younger, contacts were the bomb.  I started wearing them soon after I had gotten glasses - it wasn't cool to wear glasses your Junior year of High School (or so I thought).

As I got older, my eyes didn't seem to take to wearing contacts anymore and I gradually began to wear glasses permanently.  Black, cat-eye framed glasses was my signature piece in my business suit ensemble.  And even though I worked out of my car (pharmaceutical sales) in the hot Texas sun, I didn't seem to mind squinting all day.  Though I do very much mind the 3 very large lines across my forehead as a result of all that squinting now.
One by one, friends and relatives began to have LASIK eye surgery and all loved it. "The best thing I have EVER done for myself!" resonated with me.  Having worn glasses for well over half my life at this point, it was time to check into having LASIK myself.

With many options to have LASIK done here in Austin and many opinions on who to see, I scheduled a few consultations. The consultation is a basic eye exam to see if you are a good candidate for the procedure.  And the nice thing, the consultation is complimentary.  It was easy peasy.  And I was all ready to go as I walked out of the office.

When I got home, the internal battle raged.  How could I allow someone to cut my eyes?  What if I lose my vision?  I look better in glasses anyways.  How on earth can I justify spending the money on myself when I have 3 children to care for? and on....and on.....

As a mother, we tend to think of ourselves last.  And in this case, I put off doing something I really wanted because I didn't think my needs or wants were as important as my families'.   And so I trudged on, squinting on the boat in the summer, pushing my sweaty glasses up my nose as I ran, and putting makeup on an inch from the mirror.  I could sacrifice, I told myself.

This summer, something changed.  I got fed up.  I was sick of my glasses for one.  And I wanted to do something for myself.  Having LASIK wasn't about improving my looks.  It wasn't about not squinting in the sun (thought that was a MAJOR bonus!).  I was about doing something for me.
As a mom, you are constantly thinking of others.  From the moment my day starts and I am getting kids ready for school til my head hits the pillow (and I just finished folding your last load of laundry), my day is focused on their needs.  It's exhausting.  I wanted to do something for me.  Something that would   internally feel completely decadent and rewarding.  So, I did it for me.

Is that selfish?  nah.  Everyone has their own individual reasons to have LASIK done.  I was never scared of the procedure.  I wasn't concerned that my sight would get worse.  And I wasn't doing it because I didn't like the way I looked it glasses.  I just did it for me.

Come back tomorrow to hear more about my journey to better eyesight and my LASIK experience.

This is a series of sponsored posts by Advanced Eye Care and Surgery and Eye LASIK Austin.  All opinions are my own.

Nannies From the Heart ~ Austin, TX

Some people come into your lives at just the right moment.  Right when you need them the most.  Rubi was that person for us.  Rubi brought calm to our chaotic household. Rubi put the best smiles on our kiddos faces.  Rubi gave us peace of mind.  Rubi was a part of our family.  And we adore her.
After the birth of our son, we needed a change in childcare for him & our 2 year old daughter.  Very quickly we decided we wanted to try a nanny in our home.  And we needed one like now......

Luckily, I found a wonderful Nanny Agency where we lived at the time who was able to help us out.  They calmed this nervous, new momma down and brought me the most wonderful candidate within 24 hours.  We were blessed with Rubi from the very beginning and like I said, she became a part of our family.

I strongly feel that our experience would not have been as favorable had we not worked with such a reputable and dependable agency.  When hiring someone to care for your children, you want the best from start to finish, which includes an agency that finds the best candidates and provides you with the best hiring experiences.

That agency here in Austin, is Nannies From the Heart.  Nannies From the Heart work with their clients step by step to help you find the ideal person for your family.  They provide you with candidates who have gone through background and reference checks, so that you can focus on whether they are a good fit with your children.

Additionally, Nannies From the Heart provides you with ongoing support throughout the relationship.  If your nanny is unavailable for even a day, they will provide you with a fill-in with no additional fees (as a member).

Even if you do not have a need for a nanny, Nannies From the Heart has a unique Sitting Service that any family could benefit from.  When I first moved to the area, finding a dependable babysitter was difficult and I really wish I had known about Nannies From the Heart's program. As a part of their program, they will find a reputable sitter for you within a 24-hour notice.

I spoke with a mom who uses this service and she had nothing but wonderful things to say about it.  She loves the fact that she can book a sitter online (even from her phone while out at the store) and hear back by the end of the day if the job is confirmed.  She can view profiles of nannies, read reviews, and request who she would like to have with her children.  This mom always requests the same sitter because she has developed a relationship with her and her kids adore her.  They prefer her over the neighborhood teenager.  Having a dependable babysitter gives you peace of mind to enjoy your evening out.

Nannies From the Heart is owned & ran by moms, who have the same concerns as you and compassion for your child's care.  This is evident by the time they take with nanny placement and sitting services.  If in need, I encourage you to give them a call!

The Best Vacation Pictures

Do you take pictures on your vacation?  Just a few? Or TONS and TONS? Only to get home and not do anything with them?  So why bother taking so many pictures in the first place, right??

Don't do this.  Please.  Take pictures.  Take TONS of pictures.

Here's why - Each and every picture you take tells a story, holds a memory, and invokes a feeling that allows us to capture our happiest moments.  And when we are on vacation - away from everyday stresses of life - we are at our happiest (most of the time).  Why would you not want to remember all these great memories?

Ask any of my family members and they will tell you I take a ton of pictures - I'm the unofficial photographer of any event, always with my Nikon slung over my shoulder.  I do happen to get a tiny bit obsessive when it comes to capturing our moments.  That's only becausee I am not a good photographer - I practice and practice, but out of 100, I'll get maybe 10% that I actually like.

Take for instance Spring Break last week.  Within 7 days, I took 1403 pictures with both my Nikon and my iPhone.  Yep.  I took pictures of everything - from posed kids in front of signs, to dirty hands picking strawberries, to laughing kids on amusement park rides - I snapped away.

Of those 1400+ pictures, I capture some amazing moments that tell a story - that make me smile remembering the way the moment felt - that I want to remember forever.

Moments like these:
My 2 year old's first official amusement park ride.  I remember him patiently waiting to get on, being upset as the gate shut right in front of us, so we had to wait for the next ride, and then his sweet baby boy laughter as we went around in circles.
My big girl's moment to conquer her fear of big roller coasters - she was nervous but came out ready to ride it again!
Who cares where we were - how could you not want this moment preserved forever?
My oldest son's obsession with sharks - he stood there for 20 minutes watching all the sharks swim by - he was enthralled and that makes this momma happy.
Another big moment for my son - I was thrilled to see his excitement and rapt attention to the guide as we looked at Mammoth Bones - an experience I was again happy to provide.
The baby's was thrilled to play with farm animals this past week - he fed 5 week old baby goats, mooed with cows, petted horses, and ran with chickens - all moments I captured.
How about taking a 30 minute break under a giant oak tree on the banks of a river...in front of the Texas White House to boot.  I will remember that moment of relaxation and down time - it was sweet.
 and more....
 and more...
I honestly could go on & on...remember, I have over 1400.....

But that is not the purpose of this post.  What I'd love for you to take away is to capture the moments of your vacation - capture the smiles, the awe, the giggles, the fun...and your memories will last long after the vacation laundry is done (ugh) and everyone is back into a routine.

You don' need a fancy camera to take the pictures with - some of my favorites from this last week came from Instagram on my iPhone - just take them.

That said, I want to see your favorite Spring Break picture!  If you would be so obliged, please send me your favorites - I would love to feature them on here and on our Facebook Page next week.  Send me the picture that sums up your Spring Break week - the ones with laughter or tears - maybe it's the gorgeous scenery? Or the best BBQ (oh- I have one of those!).  Email your photo to rebecca@rwethereyetmom.com

And don't forget to link up with us tomorrow on Friday Daydreamin'.  Tell us a little about your Spring Break - or if you haven't gone yet - tell us where you are going!  I want to continue to daydream about Spring Break a little longer!

Travel Pinspiration

There are so many awesome social media tools to use when planning a vacation.  You may hear about a fantastic vacation and see some great pictures from your cousin's trip to the beach on the Facebook.  Or maybe you heard about the "amazing snow" up in Colorado from all the Ski resorts you follow on the Twitter.  Maybe you go the old fashioned route and Google it (gosh, is that really that "old-fashioned" now?).

As if this isn't enough, there is a new way to gather even more travel inspiration....Pinterest.  For those of you new to the show (ya live under a rock somewhere?), Pinterest is a virtual bulletin board to "pin" pictures and ideas you come across that you want to save and look at later.  Each pin is linked to the source of the picture - In other words, I can pin a recipe for Smore's Bars to my recipe board and when I click on it later, it will take me to the site of the original recipe.  It. is. awesome.
I have been on Pinterest for a few months now, gathering recipes to try, decorating ideas for the Holidays, and fun Toddler activities to do with my youngest.  Just this past week, I started looking up what Piniterest could offer me in terms of a subject near to my heart...traveling.

WOW.

I have found so many links to places I want to go someday (filed neatly on my Vacation Bucket List board), fun places to take the kiddos (Fun Places to Take the Kids - duh), and some great travel keepsakes to make (Travel Keepsakes & Gadgets).  I created a board the other day to list all the places I want to go in Texas.  I created a board for all the Yummy Travel Food I want to try (you know me and food).  And I created a board to list Inspirational Travel Stories.

The Sky is the limit!  If you have an upcoming trip to Hawaii, create a board for it and start pinning your vacation ideas to it.  Road Trip to California this summer?  New York City in the Fall?  Want some vacation photography hints?  How about some packing ideas?  My guess is you can find all this and so much more.

I love it - the ideas are endless.  I have started to follow some of my travel friends who I have met through this blog and y'all have the best pins!!  If you are not on board (come on, ya know you want to try it!), send me a quick email and I will send you an invite to join (it's the only way).  Or if you are - let me know, I'd love to follow you and see some of the awesome things you have pinned!

Now, back to my current obsession, pinning some of the Best National and State Parks across the US to take the kids to.

Tuesday Travel Tips: Preserving Travel Memories!

One of the best ways to "hold" onto those travel memories is by finding unique ways to preserve them.  And as your kids get older, have them become involved in creating them!

Keeping track of your trip is not only fun while you are doing it but it also preserves the adventure to look back on in the future.  Once your kids have the task of collecting mementoes, they will start to see things with new enthusiasm and learn even more while traveling!

Here are some fun ideas to preserve your vacation memories:

Written Journal
One of the most common travel records, this works best for children who are very comfortable writing.  You can start off the trip with a decorated blank journal and give it to your child as a gift before heading out the door. Encourage them to write in it at the same time every day and you may give them some prompts (what was your favorite thing you saw today?  How long did we travel for? etc.) to get them going.  Collect postcards, brochures, and tickets to any attractions to add to the journal.

Keep in mind that if yo have to force your child to write and it becomes a chore....this may not be the best way to preserve those memories......

so try one of these....

Photo Journal
Make your kids photographers for the trips.  Give them a disposable or inexpensive digital camera and ask them to take pictures of what they like and want to remember about the trip.  Maybe even give them an assignment with a list of things they need to take pictures of?

When you get home, spend an afternoon making a photo journal together with them.  Make sure they pick out the pictures and add their own captions, making it completely their creation.

Post Card Journal
Have your child pick up a post card at ever stop you make - really every stop - including the dingy truck stop for coffee & potty breaks.  Ask them to jot down a few thoughts on the back of each postcard regarding what they were doing, favorite things to see, etc.  When you get home, string them all through a ring.  Instant Vacation Journal!

Video Diary
You know the video camera can't be beat for bringing the adventure home with you, but how about giving your child the chance to make his own video for the trip?  Especially now, in the age of iPhones & iTouches that all have video recording abilities.  Have them do a daily video diary where they talk directly into the camera, telling their experiences...good & bad.  Have them "interview" people along the way - grandparents, the tour guide, the waiter at the local deli, etc.  Or simply have them take the scenic shots, providing their own commentary.

When you get home, you will have so much fun putting a movie together of your trip.  And you will laugh for years to come!  Precious!

Family Travel Times
Have each member write small articles about their vacation: how they got there, what they saw, what they loved or hated about the weather, the food, the cultural differences, etc.  Be sure to take photographs or draw pictures to accompany your articles.

When you get home, cut & paste these articles and pictures on sheets of 8 1/2 x 11-inch paper & photocopy them for friends, neighbors, or mail to family members.  Some software programs may have the ability to make a newsletter format for you.  Or step it up a notch - if you have a blog, allow each family member to "post" their article online.

These are fun ideas!!  I'd love to hear how you best preserve your vacation memories.  Leave us a comment telling how you do it.  Or better yet, drop us a note at rebecca@rwethereyet.com and we may feature your ideas in a future post.
